Qld: Six rescued off Mackay after boat gets swamped

BRISBANE, Dec 17 AAP - Four people were rescued from an island off the Queensland central
coast today and two more remained with their boat after it was swamped overnight, rescue
authorities said today.

An Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) spokesman said one woman and three children
were picked up from Refuge Bay near Scawfell Island, 28 nautical miles north-east of Mackay.

They were taken off the island by the Central Queensland rescue helicopter after activating
a satellite distress beacon and were flown to Mackay.

A man and another child remained with the family's 4.2-metre dingy which was anchored
at the island before being swamped.

They will be picked up by a Volunteer Marine Rescue boat from Mackay.

The spokesman said the rescues were a timely reminder of the importance of satellite
distress beacons on the eve of the holiday season.

"Satellite beacons have saved hundreds of lives this year," he said.

"Anyone planning a boating trip over the Christmas period should be carrying a beacon."
