DIVISION III ATHLETES LOSE 'PREFERRED' STATUS.(Sports)

It has been said that Division III is the purest form of college athletic competition. With the recent addition of Proposition 93 to the NCAA bylaws, it seems Division III will be purified even further.

What came out of this winter's NCAA convention in Nashville, in the language of the NCAA, is this: No longer will a Division III institution consider athletic ability as a criterion in the formulation of the financial aid package. Simply put, schools competing in Division III are no longer allowed to give preferred financial aid packages to student-athletes.

Some say it's the way Division III has always operated. Others say Proposition 93 - implemented by the Division III steering committee - discriminates against athletes.

Some see it as a timely and welcome clarification. "This is the way it was supposed to be before," Albany State football coach Bob Ford said. "This is the spirit of that rule."
