back‐arc basin

back‐arc basin A zone of substantial sedimentation and tectonic enlargement, lying behind an island arc. The process of this enlargement, known as back‐arc spreading, is thought to resemble normal oceanic crust formation, but in conjunction with a subducting plate. This injection of new oceanic crust seems to be dispersed, rather than in spreading ridges.
